Child Hunger Initiatives

One in four children struggle with hunger in Southeast Ohio. Children who experience food insecurity are much more likely to experience poor health and stunted development. Children who are food insecure are more likely to require hospitalization, are at higher risk of chronic health conditions, have more frequent oral health problems, and face poorer physical quality of life.

When our children have healthy foods to eat, they learn more and they do better in school. This is critical to our state's future.

Summer Feeding
The Summer Food Service Program works to meet the needs of hungry children in summer by providing them with nutritious meals and snacks when resources are not available. The program is open to ALL children 18 years of age or younger, or any person 19-21, who is mentally or physically disabled. We operate the program in Athens, Gallia, Hocking, Perry, and Meigs Counties. There are no income requirements and the only stipulation is that the meal must be ate on-site. Check out the full list of FREE meal sites for Summer 2019 here!
Weekend Meals

Similar to the backpack program, but handed out during the summer at our summer feeding sites, weekend meals provide children with food for the weekend until the summer feeding sites open up again on Monday.

Rural Summer Feeding
The summer rural feeding program provides 11 kid-friendly, shelf-stable meals each week to children who have transportation and access barriers that make attending other summer meals programs difficult. We operate this program for Morgan County and Athens County, serving Nelsonville-York and Trimble Local School Districts.
Summer Farmers Markets
The summer farmers market program provides fresh produce and popular protein items to families with children participating in the summer weekend meals program or summer rural delivery meals program.

Head Start

Our Kitchen provides lunches for our Head Start programs in Athens, Hocking, and Perry Counties. For more information on Head Start, please visit their website.

Backpack Program
Our backpack program provides bags of shelf-stable food for low-income students on Fridays, to supplement their access to food over the weekend when school is not in session. We operate the Trimble PridePacks program, which provides backpacks for 125 students every week.
